Seeing the Heat: How Thermal Cameras Reduce Costly Downtime
In the harsh environment of Australian open-cut mining, reliability is everything. Every minute of production counts, and every breakdown has a price tag.
For operators of heavy mining equipment, that price can easily run into tens of thousands of dollars per incident. The cost is not just in repairs, but in lost production, idle crews, and recovery coordination.
An increasing number of mines and civil construction companies are using FLIR cameras for thermal inspections to catch equipment failures before they happen.

Customer Profile

No Worries Water specialises in finding unexplained water entry in new residential construction, offices, and commercial buildings.
Director Matt Boyd has a background in marine sciences and maths. He uses this experience to take a forensic approach to finding leaks and ingress that others can’t.
Recently Matt was called in by a building company to detect the source of a ceiling leak in a newly constructed house. Using his FLIR E86 Thermal Camera Matt found every joint in a ceiling water pipe leaked when the hot water system was turned on. The slow accumulation of water not only damaged the plaster and finishes, it also caused mould to build up.
Matt then used his FLIR Thermal Studio Suite to build a report for the client. Armed with this report the client was able to call back the plumbers as part of the warranty install. All the issues were then fixed before more surfaces were damaged.
While Matt has tried other thermal cameras he likes his e86 FLIR camera’s superior resolution, autofocus, and the ability to use it one handed. He also likes his dual field of view lens so that he can switch to telephoto for close up shots.
