Customer Profile
Townsville based Voltec Maintenance is a preventative maintenance company who specialise in electrical and fire protection testing.
Recently Josh Forrest used his FLIR E54 Thermal Imaging Camera to detect a high-level fault on a 3 phase circuit that required immediate attention. His thermal image shows a high resistance connection on the neutral phase.
If left undetected it could have created an electrical fire and caused significant damage to the asset owners’ equipment. Although in this instance there was also visual damage, this is not always the case. Without regular thermography inspections serious faults can go undetected.
As a licensed electrician at Voltec, Josh not only detected the fault but was able to offer the customer an action plan to repair the fault.
This example highlights the importance of annual thermography surveys for electrical wiring and equipment inspections. Regular thermal inspections are ideal for predictive maintenance, and to detect hot spots and fire risks.
It also highlights the importance of thermography training. To keep his skills sharp, Josh recently successfully completed his Level 2 ITC Thermography training with GTEK infrared.

What is Thermal Fusion in IR Cameras?
Thermal fusion is a valuable tool in electrical, mechanical, building and other inspections because it combines the heat-detecting power of infrared images with the clarity of visible light images.
This feature allows folks who are not used to seeing a thermography report be able to see the infrared image more easily against the background image captured by a visual light camera.
Thermal fusion enhances the thermal sensitivity of infrared with the visual context of optical cameras, providing a more complete picture in challenging conditions. These applications can include building, mechanical and electrical inspections.
